The Twelfth International Conference on Open Magnetic Systems for Plasma Confinement (OS2018) was held at the University Hall of University of Tsukuba in Tsukuba Science city, Japan, through 27-31 August, 2018. OS2018 was organized by the Plasma Research Center of the University of Tsukuba. There were 87 scientific presentations in total, (48 Oral talks and 39 posters) from 7 countries. The International Program Committee selected not only the presentations but also the papers to be published in Plasma and Fusion Research. These papers are reviewed by the international reviewers among the participants.
The topics discussed at OS2018 covered a wide range of physics and technology issues related to plasma and fusion research especially for concerning the open magnetic concept, such as plasma transport, turbulence, magnetohydrodynamic stabilization, plasma diagnostics, plasma heating, direct energy convertor and various applications. The papers in this Plasma and Fusion Research detail the progress made in these areas.
It has been agreed that the thirteenth conference (OS2020) will be held in Korea hosted by KAIST, Korea in 2020.
Finally, the members of the Organization Committee are grateful to the Japan Society of Plasma Science and Nuclear Fusion Research for its cooperation in the publication of these papers and in particular to the guest editors and the publication chair, M. Sakamoto.
