Papers from the second Japan-China Bilateral Workshop on Target Materials (2008)


PREFACE


The Japan-China Bilateral Collaboration on the Study of Ultrahigh Density Plasma was established in 2001 and its second phase began in 2006. Target materials are a key issue in the study of ultrahigh density plasmas. A section on target fabrication was created at the 2005 workshop on ultrahigh density plasma production, application and theory for laser fusion at Nine Village Valley, Sichuan. The workshop successfully produced high level academic exchanges and an effective and efficient presentation of the state-of-the-art developments in this research field. However, to attract greater attention and participation of more scientists in these fields, the organizing committee then modified and enlarged the scale of the workshop for the Japan-China Bilateral Workshop on Target Materials 2007 held at Huangshan Mountain. The proceedings of the first workshop were published as NIFS-PROC Series, vol. 70. In 2008, the second Japan-China Bilateral Workshop on Target Materials was held at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University from November 16 to 19; it included a laboratory tour of Gekko XII and was co-chaired by T. Norimatsu, K. Nagai, Y. Tang, and Z. Z. Gu.

As an extended version of the conference proceedings, this special issue of Plasma Fusion Research (PFR) contains the invited and contributed papers submitted to PFR Rapid Communications. All papers have been assessed according to the standards of the PFR journal at the Special Committee under the Editorial Board of PFR, in which H. Nishimura and K. Nagai (Guest Editor) are included. Z.Z. Gu, T. Endo, M. Nakai and T. Norimatsu gave technical assistance for the editors. The organizing committee would also like to thank Ms. I. Kobatake for her great assistance in creation of this special issue.
